| From the Pacific Ocean to the Columbia, Willamette and Mississippi Rivers, I am always most at ease when there is water and fish close at hand. In particular I am interested in the species, ecology, and peoples who’s culture is centered on and around the aquatic environments. Presented here are two projects from what I call my “fish trail”. The first project looks at a little known but vibrant commercial fishery on the Mississippi, Ohio and Illinois Rivers. Utilizing traditional methods and equipment which have changed little in the past 150 years, the men and women who fish these waters do so in the face of increasing environmental, legal and economic difficulties. This portfolio considers these remarkable people, the fish they pursue, and the fantastic and ever changing environment which sustains them both. The second project looks at a Rick Oltman’s hook and line salmon trolling enterprise aboard the F/V Cape Cleare. Centered on the Gulf of Alaska northwest of Sitka, this portfolio looks at the salmon, stormy skies and rugged individuals of maritime Alaska. |
